How do Artificial Intelligence products learn to do what they do?

How do they do that?
Ever wonder how Artificial Intelligence or (AI) products are developed or how they can do what they do? How do they learn to understand my voice? How do these products acquire the information (data) that they need to interact with me? It’s something you never think about when using your VR headset or speaking into your phone or home voice-activated device.

It’s all about Ground Truth Data (GTD). GTD is data that you and I encounter and process every single day, typically without even thinking about it as “data.” It’s the faces we see, the spaces we occupy, the objects we see, the sounds we hear, and our conversations as we live our daily lives. This kind of natural input we receive from our surroundings is a vast resource of data necessary for a rapidly growing collection of software products based on AI and Machine Learning (ML).

At first, it may seem like it would be pretty easy to collect ground truth data; after all, we are doing this kind of collection every day with our mobile devices, right? We record our voice, capture photographs, and video our reality all the time, and we share it on social media constantly, so what’s the big deal?

It’s a big deal!
Ground truth data is crucial for companies who develop AI and ML products that ultimately have human interaction. The products’ performance relies on the quality of the data, which drives the effectiveness of AI and ML algorithms. If data is collected but not managed correctly, the algorithms in the products will fail, and the user experience will be degraded.

Ground truth data is captured, processed, and ingested by algorithms to do something you and I take very much for granted: learning. It’s easy for us to imagine a world out there just waiting for our eyes and ears to take in. Most of us are unaware of our massively complex human brains’ role in creating a seamless world we know as “truth.” This incredibly complex set of neurological processes that we know as “learning” makes our world possible.

The world around us becomes “GTD” when we here at Q Analysts collect it—by capturing it as digital images and audio files—in a way that makes it usable by algorithms, the driving force behind machine learning products.

People make it happen!
The process of collecting the data to develop AI and ML products relies on hundreds of participants. For a single product data requirement, locating and recruiting participants can be the most challenging part of a GTD collection project. Often GTD collection needs to engage particular segments of the population that may not all reside in the same geographic area. Moreover, successfully recruiting these specific groups calls for more than simply finding them on a map—the type of data collected, how it is collected, and/or sensitive cultural identity issues can make marketing to and recruiting for participants a very involved process.

Gathering clear and accurate information about the participants’ profile immediately upon taking on the project will make all the difference to any GTD collection project’s success.  Participants help by lending their voice to build and deliver speech data to develop voice-activated devices, such as smart speakers, and by contributing to the advanced recognition of human gestures, facial expression & recognition, eye tracking, full-body motion, and other behaviors.  It’s all about people!
